6:00 - 6:30; Dinner 6:30 - 7:30; Presentation 7:30 - 8:30)

Dematic campus in Grand Rapids
- Topic: Instructional Design Basics
- Special Guest Speaker: Kim E. Ruyle, Director
of Learning & Development for Siemens Dematic Corporation
To attend, please register by

What is instruction? Is the design of instruction
really different than the design of information architecture? Aren't
we creating instruction when we write procedures, directions, and
job aids? What are some key instructional design competencies. How
do I develop those competencies? Where can I find useful instructional
design resources? These questions and more will be answered in an
interactive presentation by Kim Ruyle, a frequent national STC presenter.
Kim E. Ruyle is Director of Learning & Development
for Siemens Dematic Corporation here in Grand Rapids. He has responsibility
for employee development, customer training, performance management,
and succession planning. Kim has a rare blend of hands-on work experience
and extensive academic credentials. He started his career in the
skilled trades, was a university professor, and ran his own business.

education include an MS, MEd, MBA, and PhD. Kim serves on several
expert panels for learning technologies and is a frequent conference
presenter and author. His STC experience includes more than a dozen

October Meeting
- When: Wednesday, October 15 @ 6:00PM (Networking
6:00 - 6:30; Dinner 6:30 - 7:30; Presentation 7:30 - 8:30)
- Where: Alpen Rose restaurant in Holland
- Topic: Limited Budget, High Impact Interactivity
for Online Learning
- Special Guest Speaker: Chris Willis, CEO
of Media 1 Interactive, Inc.
How much do you as a writer control the budget for
an online learning project? Actually, quite a bit! Whether you are
working with an Instructional Designer, or you're wearing multiple
hats, you are in the driver's seat when it comes to defining the
interactive instances that effect the project development costs.
In this session, you will explore budget-conscious
yet highly effective techniques for presenting relevant information
and supporting it with guided practice and feedback.
You will:
- Explore factors that can increase the course
development budget but don't enhance learning outcomes
- Investigate design strategies that improve learning
while keeping course development costs under control
- View samples from award-winning online courseware
and discuss the "behind the scenes" design decisions
that minimized production costs
Chris Willis is CEO of Media 1 Interactive, Inc., a West
Michigan contract team that helps Fortune 1000 companies prosper through
implementing effective eLearning solutions. Since founding Media 1 in 1993,
Chris has been passionate about using online technologies to meld the best
practices of technical communication and instructional design, and has
shaped a sensible eLearning development methodology that works in the real
business world. She has led dozens of online learning projects from conception
to delivery, and is an active writer/speaker for the eLearning Guild (www.elearningguild.com)
and other trade organizations. Chris holds a B.S. Degree in Arts & Media
from Grand Valley State University.
November Meeting
- When: Thursday, November 13 @ 6:00PM (Networking
6:00 - 6:30; Dinner 6:30 - 7:30; Presentation 7:30 - 8:30)
- Where: Bravo! restaurant in Portage, near
Kalamazoo
- Topic: Single-Sourcing with XML
- Special Guest Speaker: Rob Frankland,
President and CEO, Rascal Software
You write, therefore you format. Not quite cogito
ergo sum (I think, therefore I am), but it does seem that writing
and formatting have become nearly indistinguishable. If you use any
of the popular tools for creating text, MS Word or FrameMaker for
instance, you format the content as you write. Taken a step further,
products like DreamWeaver and FrontPage enable you to create formatted
Web content by design.
It may be that in the future, technical writing will be much more
about creating content and much less about formatting that content.
This talk explores the issues that make this change in focus possible
and probable. It includes an explanation of why database publishing
is such a hot topic and why it is not for everybody. What drives
the decision to treat content as data and what are the benefits of
this approach? It includes some drawbacks of current solutions and
a suggestion of what the right solution should be.
Rob founded Rascal Software in the summer of
2002. He began his career in publications as an editor at Houghton
Mifflin Co. He has
been working in software development, chiefly in the documentation
area, for over twenty years. He started as a technical writer at
Software Arts (VisiCalc) and as a documentation manager at Lotus.
He has been involved in a wide variety of software startups, including
Exa, Marathon Technologies, and Millennium Pharmaceuticals. He has
consulted to a number of large and small companies, including Sun
Microsystems, Microsoft, Rational, AT&T Wireless, and Onyx Software.
He was a founding partner of RFK Partners, a well-known CAD consulting
company. Rob has been a judge for Puget Sound STC competitions for
the past two years. He is also a frequent speaker at STC events throughout
the country.
